“A bayberry candle burned to the socket
will bring joy to the heart and gold to the pocket.”

Christmas is the perfect time of year to give your loved ones a bayberry-scented candle and continue the colonial Christmas tradition. For centuries, bayberry candles have symbolized prosperity and well wishes for the new year.

Colonial women are credited with discovering the pleasant bayberry aroma that comes from boiling the fruit of a bayberry bush. And colonial folklore says that a couple in love who must be apart at Christmas should each burn a bayberry candle on Christmas Eve so that they may be united by the bayberry candle’s pleasant scent.

And if you receive a bayberry candle, burn it all the way down on Christmas Eve to bring luck and good fortune the following year.

For a thoughtful last minute present, copy the following poem to a gift tag and affix it to a bayberry-scented candle.

“A bayberry candle burned to the socket
will bring joy to the heart and gold to the pocket.”
