Loretta, or Grandma as she is affectionately called at Isle of Candles, is the retail store owner’s mother and we love when she comes to visit. She wears a name tag when she is in the store (it just says “Grandma”) and she is excellent at unpacking new merchandise and sharing the benefits of our soy candles with shoppers.

A new study revealed that frequently lighting paraffin wax candles around your bathtub in an unventilated bathroom could be dangerous to your health. These candles emit harmful fumes that are linked to asthma and lung cancer. Read the full story about this study on BBC News.

Soy candles, on the other hand, do not release harmful toxins into the air you breathe and are a healthier choice for a luxurious candlelit bubble bath.

Paraffin wax candles introduce dangerous emissions and do more than pollute the air with smoke. Unless otherwise stated, nearly all candles use paraffin wax, a cheap, plentiful residue of refined petroleum. Paraffin has a high melting point and it requires an even higher temperature to combust.

Paraffin is a petroleum product and when petroleum is not fully combusted, petrol-carbon soot is produced, which is chemically similar to the smoke plumes you see from a big diesel truck. According to the EPA, paraffin candles give off petrol-carbon soot, which can blacken walls, ceilings and furniture; contaminate ventilation ductwork in your home; and add potential carcinogens into the air you breathe.

So if a hot, relaxing bath is on your mind after a long day of work, do yourself (and your home) a favor and only light soy candles.

The testimony below is from Melanie, who recently visited the Isle of Candles retail store in Pawleys Island, SC. She shared with us her personal experience with our soy lotion candles and we had to pass it along.

“I purchased my first soy lotion candle last year and simply love it. I keep it by the stove in case of emergency! I only bought one because I’m always skeptical of these type of advertisements. A candle that will help with burns, bites, etc?? With my boyfriend being a pharmacist, I’ve learned that some products are not always what they seem and do not work like the label claims.

A few months back, I was taking a frying pan from the stove to the sink and it slipped out of my hand. Not thinking, I grabbed the pan and not the handle. I burned all my fingers and the palm of my hand. I’m sure my instant reaction to put my hand under cold water helped greatly however, I reached for my candle and just covered my hand with soy lotion. After a few minutes, the burning was gone and I put on a surgical glove on to keep from getting lotion everywhere and kept right on working in the kitchen. Thank you for your wonderful product!”
–Melanie (Snyder, TN)
